Audi R8 LMS EVO II COTA HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of COTA in the Audi R8 LMS EVO II driven by HYMO.

The Track

This challenging and technical circuit demands careful car setup, especially navigating through corners like Turn 1, the Esses, and the tight hairpin at Turn 11. Fortunately, HYMO has your back, offering the same setup used in this impressive hot lap video available HERE.

Established in 2012, the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) has quickly become an iconic racetrack. Hosting the Formula One United States Grand Prix since its inception, the circuit features a mix of elevation changes, high-speed straights, and a variety of corners, including the challenging Esses and the notable hairpin at Turn 11. COTA has also been a fixture in the FIA World Endurance Championship, providing a thrilling racing experience since its inclusion in 2013.

Analysis

Using the Track Titan software to compare the HYMO lap to a community lap through Turn 13, we can see that the community driver loses around 0.13 seconds to the HYMO driver. The data shows that most of this time loss was caused under braking.

Looking at the braking graph, we can see that the community driver (in blue) braked slightly later than the HYMO driver. This means they had to stay on the brakes for slightly longer which didn’t leave them enough space to trail brake. The HYMO driver does utilise trail braking, which helps them to rotate the car into the corner. Thanks to this extra rotation, the HYMO driver has less steering to do on the exit, meaning they can get on the throttle slightly earlier giving them a better exit, and a faster run towards the next corner.

Hot Laps Top Tips

This analysis highlights the importance of having good pedals in sim racing, particularly when it comes to braking. Just like trail braking, using your pedals effectively is a key technique for achieving competitive lap times. Even if you’re using budget-friendly equipment, mastering your pedal control can lead to significant improvements.

Having incorrectly calibrated pedals will mean that you won’t be able to control the brakes as precisely as others. This can often result in a loss of time, but with good pedals and the right technique, you can minimize this. Remember, it’s not about the cost of the equipment, but how you use it. Even with less expensive gear, you can still be very fast! Experiment with different degrees of braking and find what works best for you, your driving style, and the specific demands of the track. Consistent practice is the key to mastery, and good pedals can make a big difference.
