Audi R8 LMS EVO II Kyalami HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Kyalami in the Audi R8 LMS EVO II driven by HYMO.

The Track

An intricate, demanding circuit, Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit can be a challenge to prepare your car for. Between Crowthorne, Barbeque, and The Esses, achieving the right balance is not easy. But don’t worry, HYMO has got you covered, and you can get the exact setup used in this hot lap video HERE.

Opened in 1961, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit is one of the most iconic racetracks in the world. It has hosted the Formula One South African Grand Prix multiple times, notably from 1967 to 1985, and again in 1992 and 1993. The circuit is known for its blend of fast sections and tight, technical corners, taking advantage of the naturally undulating landscape. The track has also been a staple of the Kyalami 9 Hours, a notable event in the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

Analysis

Using the Track Titan software, we can compare a community driver to the HYMO driver through Turn 8. The corner in question is a tight hairpin that comes just before a fast right, so getting a good exit is essential. In this case, the community driver loses 0.244 seconds to the HYMO driver, most of which is lost to not maximising speed on the exit of the corner.

From looking at the braking data, we can see that the community driver (in dark blue) brakes a tiny bit earlier than the HYMO driver, but they don’t use any trail braking, meaning they have to use more steering angle, losing them time. This means that to continue rotating through the corner, they have to keep steering which loses them speed. In this situation, the community driver actually turns in too much, not making the most of the track on the exit. The HYMO driver however, straightens the car up slightly earlier, going wider on the exit allowing them to carry more speed into the fast Turn 9.

Sim Racing Top Tips

One of the most effective ways to improve your sim racing performance is to focus on consistency. This means maintaining a steady pace and avoiding erratic driving behaviours. It’s not just about achieving the fastest lap time, but rather about consistently hitting your marks lap after lap. This requires a deep understanding of the track, the car, and how they interact. It also involves mastering the art of braking and accelerating smoothly, and knowing exactly when to turn into a corner.

In addition, consistency helps in preserving the condition of your car throughout the race. Overdriving the car can lead to excessive tyre wear and potential mechanical failures. Remember, you can’t win the race if you don’t finish it. So, practice consistency, understand your car, and master the track. This will not only make you faster but also a more competent and respected driver in the sim racing community.
