Audi R8 LMS EVO II Monza HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Monza in the Audi R8 LMS EVO II driven by HYMO.

The Track

This high-speed, technical circuit can present challenges when configuring your car. Negotiating corners like Parabolica, Ascari, and the Variante del Rettifilo requires a delicate balance. Luckily, HYMO has you covered, providing the exact setup featured in this impressive lap video HERE.

Established in 1922, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza is an iconic racing circuit. Hosting the Formula One Italian Grand Prix continuously since 1981, and sporadically since its inauguration, the track offers a blend of fast straights, chicanes, and historic turns. The venue has been a fixture in the FIA World Endurance Championship since 1953, showcasing its enduring significance in motorsports.

Analysis

Let’s use the Track Titan software to compare a community driver to the HYMO driver through Turn 6. This corner is a deceptively difficult right hander that leads straight into another right hander giving you very little time to adjust your line. This means getting a good exit is a vital part of getting a fast lap time. In this case, the community driver loses 0.3 seconds to the HYMO driver, most of which is lost to incorrect throttle application.

Firstly, let’s look at the braking. We can see that the community driver (in blue) brakes earlier than the HYMO driver, but does utilise trail braking, something that is very important for this corner. The first mistake they make is getting on the throttle too early. This causes them to have to lift off, further delaying their full throttle application, therefore slowing them down on the exit. This, combined with them not using the full width of the track on the exit made them 3 tenths of a second slower through this corner alone.

Sim Racing Top Tips

Let’s talk about the Field of View (FOV) in sim racing. The FOV is the extent of the observable game world that is seen on your display at any given moment. It’s a critical setting that can greatly affect your perception of speed and distance, directly influencing your performance on the track. A common mistake is setting the FOV too high for the sake of a broader view. However, an excessively high FOV can distort distances and speeds, making it harder to hit your braking points and apexes accurately.

Instead, try setting your FOV based on the size of your monitor and its distance from you. There are calculators available online that can help you find the optimal setting. Remember, a correct FOV may feel restrictive at first, especially if you’re used to a higher setting. But give it some time - you might find your lap times improving as you get used to a more realistic perception of speed and distance.
