Audi R8 LMS EVO II Watkins Glen HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Watkins Glen in the Audi R8 LMS EVO II driven by HYMO.

The Track

This challenging and technical circuit demands precise car setup, especially navigating through turns like the Esses, the Boot, and the 90. Fear not, as HYMO has you covered with the exact setup showcased in this impressive lap video available HERE.

Established in 1956, Watkins Glen International is a renowned racetrack with a rich history. Hosting the Formula One United States Grand Prix in the past, the circuit offers a mix of elevation changes, sweeping corners, and blind crests. It has been a consistent venue for the FIA World Endurance Championship since 1968, providing a thrilling racing experience.

Analysis

Let’s compare a community driver to the HYMO driver through Turn 8 using the Track Titan software. The corner in question is a relatively low speed right hander, with a lot of space on the outside of the track on the exit. The mistake made by the community driver in this case, is that they took the wrong line through the corner, costing them 0.207 seconds.

Let’s start by looking at the braking. The community driver (in dark blue) brakes slightly later than the HYMO driver, but they don’t use trail braking which is very important for this corner. The HYMO driver does use trail braking, releasing the brake pedal slowly and helping the car to rotate into the corner. This means that they hit the apex, getting much tighter to the inside of the corner. The community driver tries to make up for it by getting a better exit, but due to the compromised line, they can’t get on the throttle early enough to make up for the time they lost by missing the apex.

Sim Racing Top Tips

Let's discuss the importance of a proper sim racing chair setup. The chair you use for sim racing can significantly impact your comfort and performance. It’s not just about having a high-quality chair, but also about how you position it in relation to your wheel and pedals.

Firstly, ensure that your chair is at the right height. Your eyes should be level with the top third of your screen when you’re seated. Secondly, pay attention to the distance between your chair and pedals. When fully depressed, your legs should still have a slight bend in them. This position helps to prevent fatigue during long races and ensures you have full control over the pedals at all times.
