BMW M4 GT3 Donington Park HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Donington Park in the BMW M4 GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

Donington Park, nestled in the heart of England's Leicestershire countryside, offers a rich tapestry of motorsport history. Known for its flowing, fast corners interspersed with technical challenges, the circuit has been a beloved stage for various high-profile racing events, including MotoGP and British Touring Car Championships. Its layout, featuring the iconic Craner Curves, presents a thrilling combination of speed and precision, making it a British favourite among drivers and fans alike. People may recall the time Senna performed some incredible lap 1 overtakes in the rain here in 1993.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap to one of the Track Titan community drivers through Segment 6. Whilst many drivers think they should take the shortest possible route to get around the lap fastest, this is not fully the case. The reason for this is that if we were to take the shortest line between corners the turn we would have to make is much tighter. The overall loss in speed and momentum outweighs the reduction in distance travelled. This is exactly what we observe below with the community driver. They hug the inside too much which means they delay the power application and lose the advantage of momentum down the straight. The impact is over 0.1s.

Sim Racing Top Tips

To improve consistency in sim racing:

  1. Practice Regularly: Spend time learning each track's nuances. Consistent practice helps develop muscle memory and a deeper understanding of the tracks.
  2. Set Achievable Goals: Focus on achieving consistent lap times rather than the fastest laps initially. Gradually improve your times as you gain more control and understanding.
  3. Analyse Your Performance: Use Track Titan data or footage to analyse your driving. Identify where you're losing time or making mistakes.
  4. Focus on Smooth Driving: Smooth inputs for steering, braking, and acceleration often lead to more consistent lap times.
  5. Mental Focus: Stay calm and focused during your races. Mental strength is key in maintaining consistency.
  6. Learn from Others: Watch and learn from more experienced sim racers, like the HYMO hotlaps. Pay attention to their lines, braking points, and how they handle various sections of the track.
