Ferrari 296 GT3 Kyalami HYMO Hot Lap Analysis
Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Kyalami in the Ferrari 296 GT3 driven by HYMO.
The Track
Navigating the intricate, technical layout of Kyalami poses a challenge when tuning your car. From Clubhouse to Sunset and Ingwe, achieving the perfect balance can be tricky. Thankfully, HYMO has your back, providing the exact setup featured in this impressive lap video available HERE.
Established in 1961, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit stands as an iconic racing venue. Hosting the Formula One South African Grand Prix 21 times since 1967, the track showcases a mix of challenging elevations, sweeping curves, and blind crests. This circuit has also been a significant part of the FIA World Sportscar Championship since 1967.
Analysis
We can use the Track Titan software to compare a community driver to the HYMO driver through Turn 16, the final corner on the track. This is a slow left hand corner, where trail braking is crucial to rotate the car through the corner. This requires a delicate touch on the pedals to get the correct amount of braking on the entry. In this case, the community driver didn’t correctly utilise trail braking, costing them around 2 tenths.
Let’s start by looking at the braking data. We can see that both drivers brake at around the same time, but the community driver (in dark blue) starts trail braking too early, meaning they have to apply more pressure to the brakes to slow the car down. This means they then don’t have time to trail brake for the rest of the corner as they are carrying too much speed. On top of this, they take a slightly different line through the corner, turning in late but not using all of the road on the exit. The HYMO driver on the other hand is very consistent when letting off the brakes, and uses the rotation to help them through the corner, meaning that even though they turn in earlier, they are still able to carry more speed and get a faster exit.

Hot Laps Top Tips
In sim racing, the art of braking is more than just applying force to the pedal. It’s about timing and technique. The right braking technique can significantly improve your lap times, making you a more competitive racer. It’s about understanding your vehicle, the track, and the physics at play. Knowing when to brake hard and when to ease off can give you the upper hand in a race.
Trail braking is an advanced technique that involves gradually releasing the brake as you enter a corner. This allows you to maintain more speed through the turn and allows for a quicker exit. It’s a challenging skill to master, requiring a keen sense of timing and understanding of your vehicle’s dynamics. But with practice, it can shave precious milliseconds off your lap times.
