The Track

Positioned in the scenic region of Le Castellet, France, Circuit Paul Ricard is a testament to modern track design, known for its innovative safety features and the distinctive blue and red runoff areas. The 5.8-kilometre circuit boasts the lengthy Mistral Straight and a versatile layout that includes fast bends and complex technical sections. Since its inauguration in 1970, Paul Ricard has been a versatile venue, accommodating a wide range of international motorsport events, including the Formula 1 French Grand Prix.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap in blue to one of the Track Titan community drivers through Segment 8. Using the data available we can compare the very different approaches to the final corner. One approach is better for corner exit and one is better for corner entry. The reference driver is actually slower than the community driver on exit but still ends up faster through the segment because the community driver gives up so much time on the way in just to be a little bit faster on the way out. The community driver brakes slightly later and takes a super wide, late apex in order to get back on the power earlier. This a beneficial line for starting a hotlap for best speed over the start line but is one second slower overall so you would not want to do it on the actual timed attempt.
