The Track

Located in the heart of upstate New York, Watkins Glen International, affectionately known as 'The Glen', is a circuit steeped in American racing tradition. The 5.43-kilometre track is acclaimed for its high-speed layout, featuring iconic sections such as the 'Esses' and the 'Inner Loop' chicane. Watkins Glen's unique history and challenging course design have made it a revered location for a variety of racing formats, from NASCAR to sports car championships.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap in blue to one of the Track Titan community drivers through the chicane in Segment 5. This chicane is all about carrying the speed you take on the straight over the relatively flat kerbs as you thread the needle at high speed. The community driver in this example brakes for too long into the first part of the chicane so their minimum speed is compromised. It appears they have clipped the apex rather than fully mounting the kerb like the reference. By mounting the flat kerb you can make the corner less tight and carry more speed, which the reference driver does. This lack of minimum speed is carried through the entire chicane and the overall loss is just under 0.2s to the good.

Sim Racing Top Tips

Sim racing, much like real racing, demands mental strength and consistency. Develop a pre-race routine to get into the right mindset. Stay focused and maintain concentration during races, keeping distractions to a minimum. Consistency is key; it's often better to be consistently fast rather than occasionally the fastest. Practice regularly to build muscle memory and decision-making skills, ensuring you're prepared for various race scenarios.
