McLaren 720 S EVO GT3 Donington Park HYMO Hot Lap Analysis
Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Donington Park Circuit in the McLaren 720S EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.
The Track
Donington Park offers a fast, flowing and challenging 2.4-mile lap. From Craner Curves, to the Melbourne Hairpin; the track provides high speed sections requiring millimetre-perfect precision to agonisingly slow corners. Setup for this track can prove difficult because of this. Fortunately however, HYMO has you covered and you can get the very same setup used in this hot lap video HERE
Donington Park is a symbol of British motorsport. The oldest race circuit still in use in the UK, the track opened in the early 1930’s; first with a narrow track made up from Donington Hall estate access roads, then being made permanent shortly afterwards. The venue has hosted F1, MotoGP, BTCC, GT Championships and more. With its legendary history, the ‘Heart of British Motorsport’ moniker refers to more than just the midlands-based location.
Analysis
When analysing this HYMO lap against a community lap in the Track Titan platform, we can see that at the Fogarty Esses (Turns 9 and 10), the community driver loses 0.265s compared to the HYMO driver. In looking at the data, the majority of the time loss can be put down to braking.
From the data, we can see the community driver (in Blue) brakes earlier than the HYMO driver, and then fails to use the trail braking technique. This causes the Blue driver to run marginally wide in turn 9, compromising the run through turn 10. Additionally, you can see the community driver drops speed on the turn 9 apex compared to the Orange driver. This is because the driver does not trail brake, running slightly wide at turn 9 which consequently makes turn 10 a tighter corner.

Hot Laps Top Tips
This analysis has highlighted one fundamental technique for competitive driving and that is trail braking. Not every corner will require you to use this technique, but the simple act of not coming off the brake in the right manner has cost the community driver over two tenths of a second.
Getting your braking technique is one of the most important aspects of hot lapping. Try different levels of trail braking if necessary and find what works best for you, the car and the track. Remember, practice makes perfect!
