McLaren 720s EVO GT3 Barcelona HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Barcelona in the McLaren 720s EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, Spain, is a renowned motorsport track that hosts the Spanish Grand Prix. Opened in 1991, it's known for its variety of corners and straights, challenging drivers with a mix of high-speed and technical sections. HYMO know all the secrets and you can get the very same setup used in this hot lap video HERE.

The track's notable corners, like Turn 3, a long, high-speed right-hander, and Turn 9, a fast, blind corner, demand a high level of skill and car control. Its layout tests a driver's skill in aerodynamics and car setup. Additionally, the technical final sector with its slower corners tests braking and traction. It's a favourite for testing due to its balanced mix of different types of corners and straights.

Analysis

Lets take a look at the heaviest braking zone on the track - Turn 10. The HYMO reference lap driver is over 0.15s faster than the community lap driver in orange through this mini sector. Normally we try to tech drivers to focus on the corner exit as much if not more than the entry, usually when heading onto a long straight. However, here the community driver is losing time on the entry.

The reason why this time it is different is because the HYMO driver realises that the exit of this corner is not as important as other corners, because the following corner is often on the verge of being grip limited so carrying speed out does not benefit you as much as a long straight. Below you can see the HYMO driver brakes later and deeper into the turn. The reference line is tighter to enable the longer braking period. This ultimately costs the reference lap driver initially on exit but the overall advantage remains into the next segment.

Hot Laps Top Tips

In driving, particularly in racing, vision is a crucial skill that goes beyond simply seeing the road. It's about anticipation and planning your actions well in advance. Professional instructors emphasize the importance of looking far down the track, not just at the corner you're approaching but beyond it. This allows you to prepare for what's coming, adjusting your speed, position, and approach early. It's about reading the road, understanding the dynamics of your vehicle, and making decisions based on a broader view. This forward-thinking approach helps in smooth cornering, efficient braking, and overall better control of the vehicle. It's a skill that requires practice and becomes instinctive over time, allowing drivers to seamlessly navigate complex tracks and rapidly changing driving conditions.
