McLaren 720s EVO GT3 Oulton Park HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Oulton Park in the McLaren 720s EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

Oulton Park is a storied motor racing circuit located in the picturesque Cheshire countryside of England. Renowned for its undulating layout that closely follows the natural contours of the land, the track presents a challenging mix of sweeping bends, daunting dips, and crests, along with tight chicanes and corners that test the skill and courage of drivers. Opened in 1953, Oulton Park has retained much of its original character, with little of the extensive modernization seen at other venues, offering a driving experience that feels both authentic and timeless. Its signature corners like Druids, a double-apex bend, and Lodge, the final downhill corner leading to the start/finish straight, are well-known among the racing community.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap to one of the Track Titan community drivers at the Turn 7,8,9 Chicane. This one is pretty simple, the community driver in orange just brakes a fraction too early. This ends up costing them about 0.2s. They do actually set the corner up for a marginally better exit but is not enough to outweigh the loss on entry. The driver can use this to dial in their braking reference points.

Hot Laps Top Tips

  1. Know the Track: Study the track layout before driving. Understand the nuances of each corner, braking point, and straight. Use track maps and onboard footage to familiarise yourself with the circuit.
  2. Vehicle Setup: Optimise your car's setup for the specific track. Adjust the suspension, tire pressures, aerodynamics, and gearing to suit the circuit's characteristics and your driving style. Use the HYMO setups where possible.
  3. Warm Up Tires and Brakes: Ensure your tires and brakes are at optimal temperatures before pushing for a fast lap. Cold tires and brakes offer less grip and stopping power, affecting your lap times.
  4. Smooth Inputs: Be smooth with the steering, throttle, and brake inputs. Jerky movements can unsettle the car and lead to slower lap times. Smooth driving also helps maintain better control and tire preservation.
  5. Braking Technique: Brake in a straight line to ensure maximum braking efficiency. As you become more comfortable, experiment with trail braking into corners to maintain speed without compromising stability.
