McLaren 720S EVO GT3 Spa-Francorchamps HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Spa Francorchamps Circuit in the McLaren 720S EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps provides a fast, technical and challenging 4.3-mile lap. Requiring a committed, high speed lap setup for this track can prove difficult. Fortunately however, HYMO has you covered and you can get the very same setup used in this session here.

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is a staple of global motorsport. Having hosted grand prix events since 1925, the track is an enduring example of an ‘old school’ track. The blind Eau Rouge complex continues challenging drivers to this day and the tight chicane never fails to catch out unwitting drivers. Opened in 1921, it has gone through various layout changes since the original 9.3-mile lap, but is highly regarded as one of the best in the world.

Analysis

When analysing this HYMO lap against a community lap in the Track Titan platform, we can see that through the final chicane (Turns 19 and 20), the community driver loses almost 0.4s compared to the HYMO driver. In looking at the data, the majority of the time loss can be put down to throttle input.

From the data, we can see the community driver (in Blue) braked earlier into turn 19 than the HYMO driver, but crucially the blue driver keeps 12% throttle whilst braking. This consequently requires the driver to brake for longer. The blue driver then accelerates between turns 19 and 20, subsequently requiring more brake input into the final corner and delaying getting back on the throttle.

Hot Laps Top Tips

This analysis has highlighted one fundamental technique for competitive driving and that is trail braking. Not every corner will require you to use this technique, but the simple act of not coming off the brake in the right manner has cost the community driver over two tenths of a second.

Getting your braking technique is one of the most important aspects of hot lapping. Try different levels of trail braking if necessary and find what works best for you, the car and the track.
