McLaren 720s EVO GT3 Suzuka HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Suzuka in the McLaren 720s EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

Suzuka's unique figure-eight layout, featuring a crossover bridge, adds to its distinction in the racing world. The circuit is known for its demanding corners, like the famous '130R' and the tight 'S' curves, testing drivers' skills and machinery limits. Fortunately, HYMO have all the tricks and you can get the very same setup used in this hot lap video HERE.

Designed by Dutchman John Hugenholtz, Suzuka was inaugurated in 1962 as a Honda test track. Suzuka has hosted numerous prestigious events, including the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix, making it a favorite among drivers and fans for its technical complexity and high-speed challenges. The circuit remains one of the few "old school" tracks on the calendar, with little runoff or room for error.

Analysis

When analysing this HYMO lap against a community lap in the Track Titan platform, we see a common mistake that all drivers can make. Looking at the data below you can see that the community driver (orange) initially has the advantage on entry into the 2nd Degner corner at Suzuka. However, the increased speed into the corner actually causes this driver to pay the ultimate price on the exit because they end up running too deep and tightening the run out. Had they made better use of the brakes like the reference driver then the car would have decelerated more quickly and they could have made the apex.

The reference lap driver is able to rotate the car earlier and get on the power sooner because the car is on a straighter trajectory to allow more traction to be used for accelerating the car instead of turning. This is also helped by the fact the reference HYMO driver was able to apex the corner tighter and shorten the route.

Hot Laps Top Tips

Sim racing requires a unique set of driving techniques that blend real-world racing principles with the specific nuances of a virtual environment. Precision in steering, braking, and throttle control is crucial, as simulators replicate the physics of real-world cars. Understanding the track layout, ideal racing lines, and braking points remains essential. Additionally, sim drivers must adapt to the lack of physical feedback that one would experience in a real car, like g-forces, relying more on wheel feedback, visual and audio cues from the simulator to gauge their performance and vehicle behaviour. This demands a high level of concentration and the ability to quickly adapt to the simulated conditions.

Start with the HYMO setup with the support of the Track Titan platform and make adjustments to suit your unique driving style. Try hotlapping in different weather conditions whilst experimenting with car setup. This can help you better understand the car and the different characteristics which can make you better in all conditions.
