Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO Silverstone Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Silverstone in the Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO driven by HYMO.

The Track

Silverstone Circuit, located in Northamptonshire, England, is one of the most iconic and historic race tracks in the world of motorsport. Originally an airfield during World War II, Silverstone hosted its first race in 1948 and has since become synonymous with British racing heritage. It's famously known as the 'Home of British Motor Racing'.

The track is celebrated for its fast and flowing layout, featuring a mix of high-speed corners and technical sections. The current configuration is approximately 5.891 kilometres (3.66 miles) long with 18 turns, including legendary sections like Copse, Maggots and Becketts, and the Hangar Straight. These corners test a driver's skill and the car's aerodynamic efficiency.

Silverstone is a staple in both Formula 1, hosting the British Grand Prix, and GT3 racing, featuring in series like the GT World Challenge Europe. In sim racing, such as Assetto Corsa Competizione, Silverstone is replicated with high fidelity, offering players the experience of this fast-paced and technically demanding circuit.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap in blue to one of the Track Titan community drivers through Segment 2 at Maggots, Becketts and into Chapel. Here the community driver gets a little wide off the left hander in Becketts which tightens up the next right through Chapel. In a section where carrying minimum speed and momentum is critical this is a costly mistake for such a small excursion offline. The tighter line only seems to delay getting back on the throttle a fraction but this is now from a lower speed so the exit speed is way down, which is so crucial going onto the long Hangar Straight. The net loss for the community driver is over 0.1s.

Sim Racing Top Tips

Mastering high-speed corners in GT3 racing and sim racing, like Assetto Corsa Competizione, is a blend of skill, precision, and understanding of your car's aerodynamics. High-speed corners rely heavily on downforce to maintain grip, allowing the car to navigate turns at faster speeds than would be possible based purely on mechanical grip. The key is to carry as much speed as possible into the corner while maintaining control. Smooth and confident steering inputs are crucial, as abrupt changes can unsettle the car. Drivers must also be aware of the limits of tyre grip and downforce at these speeds, as pushing too hard can lead to loss of control. Effective use of braking and throttle, balancing the car through the corner, and understanding the optimal racing line are essential for maximising performance in high-speed turns. This skill is as vital in virtual environments like ACC as it is on real tracks, demanding practice and a deep understanding of vehicle dynamics.
