Porsche 992 GT3 R Barcelona HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Barcelona in the Porsche 992 GT3 R driven by HYMO.

The Track

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a favourite for Formula 1, also presents unique challenges for GT3 racing. Its diverse mix of high-speed straights and technical turns demands a versatile setup for GT3 cars, balancing aerodynamic efficiency and mechanical grip. The long, high-speed corners like Turn 3 test the aerodynamic capabilities of GT3 cars, while the technical final sector challenges braking and traction. Adapting to the circuit's varied demands is key for success in GT3 racing at this iconic track. HYMO know all the secrets and you can get the very same setup used in this hot lap video HERE.

The track has undergone several changes over the years. Initially opened in 1991, it's seen modifications to improve safety and racing quality. For instance, changes to the final sector of the track were made to slow down cars and enhance overtaking opportunities. As of 2023, the circuit is licensed to use layouts with and without a chicane, with most categories, including Formula 1, opting to omit the chicane.

Analysis

The comparison below is of the final chicane at Barcelona. Here we see the HYMO reference driver compared to a community driver. There are two keys here - minimum speed and racing line. You can see the refence lap has chosen a much more central line through the transition from the left to the right. You might initially think that for the best exit onto the main straight it might be preferred to compromise the first left to benefit the right. You would be partly right, however you can see the orange driver does this too much. The net result is losing 4 tenths in the first part of the chicane and only gaining back 0.05s on the exit. The line the orange driver takes is perhaps one you might consider on an outlap preparing to start one of your racing laps, but the minimum speed loss is too big of a hit to hotlap time. HYMO strikes just the right balance for a hotlap.

Hot Laps Top Tips

Driving GT3 cars effectively requires a blend of advanced techniques. It's essential to master the late braking capability provided by their advanced braking systems, while maintaining control. Leverage the aerodynamic downforce in high-speed corners to carry more speed. Tire management is crucial, especially in endurance races, as tire wear significantly impacts performance. Balancing the car with the throttle, particularly in mid-corner, is key to managing oversteer. Lastly, utilizing telemetry data to refine both driving style and car setup can significantly improve lap times and overall performance.
